One Person Debate For Mayor

So is there something fishy in the works? Are the other two candidates so sure of winning that the feel no need to attend? Ballot harvesting?

Vote Machine

Candidates forum at the Monarch Pines Resort in Pacific Grove Aug. 27 offered a  platform for three would-be mayors to express their views on a wide variety of topics  that impact the town — but only one, Dan Miller, showed up. Miller is running against Nick Smith and Dionne Ybarra. With about 50 people in the audience, Miller fielded
questions from Peggy Gibbs of Leadership Pacific Grove, which co-sponsored the event, and author and economist Francois Melese.
A lifelong resident of Pacific Grove, Miller served six years as a city councilmember and three years as a planning commissioner. He ran unsuccessfully for mayor against Bill Kampe in 2016. At the forum, he was asked why he’s running again. “I’m running for mayor because I wasn’t wild about the other two people who are running,” Miller said. “We have a dearth of good candidates.”

I’d expect nothing less than the normal cheating Jenny McAdams actions but to post signs more than 60 days before election day. Taken today, September 5. Sixty more days would be Monday November 4.

People on Nextdoor say it’s been up since at least Sunday September 1.

City Council Changes

Less people on council and districts?

City Hall

Pacific Grove is moving forward with creating a ballot measure to ask voters if they want to go from six to four council members, however voters likely will not see the final result until the 2026 mid-term elections.

The City Council voted 6-0-1 on Wednesday directing city staff to start the process of attaining a demographer to help draft district maps and creating a resolution of intent that they plan to vote on in October. Mayor Pro Tempore Nick Smith was absent.

The city’s decision affects the election system, how people vote. But voters will be tasked with reducing the number of council seats. Council members brought up how important it will be to inform voters in the coming months about what the decision means to keep six council members while moving to a by-district election.

“I will be supporting Measure Z, because trying to cut Pacific Grove into six pieces will be virtually impossible,” councilwoman Debby Beck said. “I think we need at least two people running from each district, and I think that’s possible with four districts. It’s a matter of moving forward at this point.”

It seems that a certain council member, a woman of supposedly impeccable standing, has dared to flout the very rules she is sworn to uphold. This audacious individual has been caught red-handed, brazenly erecting signs on public property long before the designated start date.

One cannot help but wonder if this flagrant disregard for the law is a mere oversight, or perhaps a calculated attempt to gain a competitive edge. After all, when one is hand-picked by existing council members, it is easy to believe oneself above the common rabble.

This council member’s feeble excuses for her transgressions are as laughable as they are insulting. They begin with a feigned ignorance of the misdemeanor, following on with a claim that it was the unknown act of an over-zealous supporter, and ending with a defiant but false assertion that the property owner’s permission was granted.

It is truly a scandal that such a person holds a position of power. Let us hope that justice will prevail, and that this individual will be held accountable for her actions.

Are the esteemed council members and mayor willing to turn a blind eye to this or hold their appointed peer accountable to the high standards of appropriate behavior of someone in office?
