The May 17, 1906 blaze that swept through most of the Chinese village at Point Alones seared not only the landscape of the Monterey Peninsula, but the memories and histories of its people. The fire continues to loom as some kind of Original Sin whenever there are discussions about this remarkable Chinese village tucked into the cove on Pacific Grove’s eastern boundary.

What emerged was a festival that replicated the lights of the squid boats that had been driven away. Some members of the Chinese community find the resulting festival offensive. The Feast of Lanterns folks respond that their event has nothing to do with the Chinese village.

The council also approved a number of “housekeeping” ordinances, including changes in regulations of microwave equipment and antennas.

Resident Lorna Moffett said the council should consider health problems that could be caused by microwave radiation from cell phone towers. She said proposed antenna locations should be marked so the public would be aware of them.

Scott Miller Endorsed For Sheriff

After watching the spats between the other two candidates, the choice has to be obvious. I see the others on the TV news and must comment that neither one looks in shape to be a peace officer.

The Monterey County Prosecutors’ Association endorsed candidate Scott Miller for sheriff Monday, after a “near unanimous” vote by its members.

Although he officially left the job as a retiree, he later said he was unfairly fired and ended up suing the city even as he successfully campaigned for City Council. An hour before being sworn in, he formally accepted a $150,000 settlement of the wrongful termination claim he filed against the city. Miller was the top vote-getter in that race for seats on the council.

Matheson said Miller is the only sheriff’s candidate who speaks Spanish, and would bring a “great intellect” to the office.

Library Fantasizes Tax On Marijuana Sales For Support

A “library summit” held Feb. 6 at the Pacific Grove Natural History Museum drew more than 100 people, including City Council members, library board members, city administrators, members of Friends of the Library, library staff and others, said senior librarian Lisa Maddalena.

Ideas raised included proposed new services, approaching Pebble Beach residents as a potential source of tax revenue, using taxes from medical marijuana sales in the city if cannabis clinics are approved, establishing a library foundation to raise funds, and trying, once again, to get a two-thirds majority of voters to approve a tax to keep the library open.
