A stately and apparently healthy Monterey pine towering over a Pacific Grove house will come down, the Pacific Grove City Council ruled 5-1 Wednesday.

Residents Stephen and Michaela Braveman sought removal of the tree that stands on the city right-of-way in front of their house at 239 Walcott St. after several Monterey pines in neighboring George Washington Park toppled during a storm in October.

The 30-year-old tree was examined by two former city foresters and both pronounced it healthy but in need of trimming, said city public works director Celia Perez Martinez.

The Monterey City Council unanimously adopted revisions to the current ordinance regulating smoking in public places. The revised ordinance extends the no smoking ban to the Recreation Trail.

A Pacific Grove man was arrested on suspicion of burglary Tuesday after a neighbor spotted him climbing into a window of a residence, police said.

Pacific Grove police said they arrested Andrew Scott Middlebrook, 19, about 11:30 a.m. after he ran from the home near Gibson Avenue and Monterey Street. He was caught with stolen property a few blocks away after a short foot chase, police said.

Now look at this picture and ask why the news calls him a ‘man’.

The mid-year review of the city’s financial situation indicates that the city has the ability to cancel the remaining six furlough days, according to the city council agenda.

Cancellation of the remaining six furlough days would cost the city approximately $65,000.

As part of the continuing effort by the Monterey Police Department to create and maintain a safe community, the February campaign of its Traffic Safety and Enforcement Strategy will focus on violations relating to signs and signals.

The department encourages drivers to pay attention to traffic signs and signals regarding one-way streets, prohibited turns, stop signs and red lights.

Arsonist Pleads Guilty In Tattoo Shop & Restaurant Fires

In all the news articles reporting on this there is no mention whatsoever of the suspicious fire at the David Avenue apartment complex that happened around the same time.

Nathan Augustine, age 28 of Pacific Grove, pled guilty to two counts of arson and admitted using an incendiary device.

Police searched Augustine’s house and found numerous containers of lighter fluid, gloves similar to gloves found at the Lattitudes Restaurant, and the unique symbol similar to the British Union Jack with additional lines through it. Augustine was arrested and confessed to the crimes.
